D1676 was named 'VULCAN' at Cardiff in October 1965
until removal in June 1989. It was sent to store carrying the
number 47623 until 04/01/94 returning to service with the
running number of 47843. The loco caught fire near Reading
Station on 16/06/94 whilst working the Manchester - Brighton
Intercity passenger service. She was removed from the train and
later moved to Doncaster Works for repairs. After Virgin Cross
Country had taken over the locomotive it was again renamed 'VULCAN'
at Old Oak Common open day held on 05/08/00.
When Virgin handed the locomotive back to Porterbrook Leasing it
was further leased to Freightliner Heavy Haul Limited.
The locomotive was purchased by Riviera Trains on 01/01/05.
retaining its Virgin livery with red buffer beams and
'VULCAN' nameplates. In September 2006 the locomotive was
repainted into the companies house colours of Oxford blue livery
still retaining 'VULCAN' nameplates now fitted in
the original Western Region position on the body side along with
a red background.
